Race And Culture in America

Race And Culture in America

Being “White” is no longer necessary for being elected to public office, according to The Atlantic.  Americans are also not only defiining themselves as “White” rather they are taking cues from minorities who embrace diversity.  This is of course is being driven by pop culture and the multiculturalism that has stormed America.  This new face of America that we often talk about is here.  Now the question is what new ideas, values and traditions will come from it.  The Atlantic suggests that the future will reveal a culture that will treat members as individuals rather than as members of a identity group.  Trends in marketing suggest as much — the author points out the iconic iPod commercials that featured dancing silhouettes, which can be adapted to highly individualized tastes.   All true but I hope we don’t lose sight that ethnic identity defines us and gives us the traditions that make this country great.
